The Skill Hiding Inside Every Chess Move
When people talk about what chess does for kids, "concentration" usually comes up first. But there's a quieter skill developing underneath every game that gets far less credit: planning.
Planning isn't the same as focus. It's the ability to hold a sequence of future steps in mind, weigh how each one changes the situation, and adjust the plan when something unexpected happens. Psychologists file it under "executive function" — the same mental toolkit kids use to pack a school bag the night before, break a big project into steps, or figure out how to fit homework and practice into one evening.
Chess happens to be an unusually good workout for exactly that skill.
Why Chess Forces Kids to Plan (Whether They Want To or Not)
A child can't win a chess game by reacting to one move at a time. The moment they move a piece, the board changes, and every plan they had needs re-checking. That loop — propose a plan, test it against a changing situation, revise it — is planning in its purest form, and chess makes kids run it dozens of times in a single game.
This isn't just a nice theory. Researchers have been testing it directly. A cross-sectional study of 5- to 6-year-olds, published in 2025, compared children enrolled in chess classes with children who weren't, and found the chess group scored measurably higher on tests of executive function — including planning, cognitive flexibility, and inhibitory control (the ability to stop and think before acting). A separate 2025 study in *Frontiers in Psychology* found that children who played chess had stronger visuospatial working memory than non-players, which is the mental scratchpad kids use to hold a plan in mind while checking whether it actually works.
A third 2025 study, published in the Spanish journal *Revista de Psicología* (*Psychology, Society, & Education*), went a step further with 8- to 12-year-olds: it didn't just measure executive function gains from a chess training program, it asked whether those gains showed up in daily life outside the chessboard — the more interesting and harder question to answer.
What "Planning Ahead" Actually Looks Like at the Board
For a young player, planning shows up in small, concrete habits long before it looks like anything sophisticated:
- Checking "what happens if I move here?" before actually moving — instead of playing the first move that looks good.
- Noticing a piece is undefended two moves before it's actually captured, not after.
- Building toward something — controlling the center, developing pieces, preparing castling — rather than making moves in isolation.
- Recovering from a bad plan. When an opponent does something unexpected, a child who's building planning skills adjusts instead of freezing or panicking.
None of this happens on day one. A brand-new player mostly reacts. A player six months into consistent lessons and practice starts to visibly pause, think ahead, and explain their reasoning — "I'm moving my knight here so I can control this square later." That shift is the planning skill taking hold.
Where This Skill Shows Up Off the Board
The reason this matters to parents isn't the chess rating. It's that planning is one of the most transferable skills a child can build, because so much of school and daily life runs on it:
- Breaking a big assignment into smaller steps instead of starting the night before it's due.
- Reading a word problem in math and mapping out the steps before picking up a pencil.
- Packing for a trip, planning a science fair project, or organizing a weekend — all the same "hold the end goal, plan the steps, adjust as needed" loop.
Chess doesn't teach these things by lecturing kids about planning. It teaches them by making planning the only way to win, over and over, until it becomes a habit that shows up everywhere else.
How to Actually Build This at Home
Watching a child play isn't enough on its own — the skill develops fastest with a bit of structure:
- Ask "what's your plan?" instead of "was that a good move?" It shifts the conversation from right-or-wrong to thinking-ahead.
- Let losses stand. A child who's rescued from every bad plan never learns to spot one. Losing a game because a plan didn't hold up is exactly how the lesson sticks.
- Use puzzles, not just games. Chess puzzles force a child to plan a short sequence correctly before moving — a more concentrated version of the same skill a full game builds slowly.
- Keep the sessions age-appropriate. A structured curriculum that builds from basic piece coordination to real multi-move planning works better than open-ended play alone, especially for kids under 10.

The Bigger Picture
No single activity builds executive function on its own — reading, sports, music, and structured play all contribute in their own ways.
