Parents often introduce chess to their children as "a fun game." It is. But calling chess just a game is like calling swimming just a way to get wet. The cognitive, emotional, and academic benefits of chess are well-documented, substantial, and transferable to almost every area of a child's development.

Chess also rewards patience. Impulsive players who grab material without calculating consequences consistently lose to patient players who think before every move. This lesson — that patience and deliberation outperform impulsivity — is one of the most valuable life skills chess instils.
Chess and Academic Performance: The Evidence
Multiple large-scale studies support a correlation between chess training and academic performance:
- A 2019 meta-analysis in the journal *Educational Research Review* found significant positive effects of chess instruction on mathematical skills and general cognitive ability
- Schools in Armenia integrated chess into the national curriculum starting in 2011; subsequent standardised test data showed measurable improvements in students who received chess instruction
- In the United States, chess programs in New York City public schools have been associated with improved reading and mathematics scores
