The Dovetail Mate — also called Cozio's Mate — occurs when the queen delivers checkmate while the enemy king is blocked on both sides by its own pieces, with no escape square available. The name comes from the dovetail joint shape the mating pieces form. This pattern arises when the opponent's own pieces become jailers rather than defenders. Practising dovetail mate puzzles trains you to identify overloaded positions where the opponent's pieces are both blocking escape and failing to defend and to find the queen move that exploits this self-trapping. Spotting when pieces are simultaneously restricting the king and failing to defend it is a key attacking skill.
