About deflection puzzles

Deflection is the tactic of forcing an enemy piece away from a key defensive duty — a square it guards, a file it covers, or a piece it protects. By sacrificing material or creating a forcing threat, you lure the defender away and expose the target it was protecting. Deflection puzzles train you to identify overloaded pieces — those doing too much defensive work — and to exploit them with forcing moves. The motif appears in both simple and highly complex tactical combinations at all levels of chess. Practising deflection puzzles sharpens your ability to evaluate what each piece is doing and to find the move that destroys the opponent's defensive structure.

How to train deflection

A deflection is a shape, not a sequence. Once you can spot the shape you will find the move in seconds instead of calculating from scratch, so train for recognition speed: glance, name the pattern, then verify.

What level is this suitable for?
