About middlegame puzzles
The middlegame is where chess is truly won and lost. With pieces developed and kings castled, both sides fight for dominance over key squares, files, and diagonals. Middlegame puzzles test your ability to find the decisive tactical move hidden within complex positions — sacrifices, combinations, and quiet positional strikes that decide the game. Solving middlegame puzzles trains pattern recognition, calculation depth, and the instinct to ask whether something special exists in every position. From knight forks to back rank threats, each puzzle in this collection sharpens the skills that matter most during the fifteen to thirty crucial moves where the game's outcome is truly determined.
How to train middlegame
Positions from this phase of the game repeat constantly, so the aim is recognition rather than raw calculation. Work slowly at first and name what you see — which side is better, which piece is loose, what the immediate threat is — before you look for a move.
