About epaulette mate puzzles
The epaulette mate takes its name from military shoulder decorations: the king is mated in the centre of a rank with its own rooks standing either side, blocking the only squares it could run to. It is a pure illustration of a recurring chess idea — that your own pieces can be your worst liability. These puzzles are excellent for young players because the pattern is visually memorable and teaches self-awareness about piece placement. Recognising it also helps you avoid walking into it, which happens more often than most players realise in fast games.
How to train epaulette mate
Forced mates reward exhaustive checking. Look at every check first, even the ones that look absurd — a mating net usually starts with a move that gives up material or puts a piece where it can be captured.
