About fool's mate puzzles

Fool's mate is the fastest possible checkmate in chess, delivered in two moves by Black after White weakens the squares around the king with the pawn moves f3 and g4. Nobody will lose this way twice, so the value of these puzzles is not the sequence itself but the lesson underneath it: pawn moves in front of your king create permanent holes, and the diagonal towards g1 or g8 is the most dangerous of them. Beginners who understand why Fool's mate works stop making the class of move that allows far more common early attacks.

How to train fool's mate

Forced mates reward exhaustive checking. Look at every check first, even the ones that look absurd — a mating net usually starts with a move that gives up material or puts a piece where it can be captured.
