Scholar's mate is the four-move attack on f7 that nearly every beginner meets, either as attacker or victim. These puzzles cover both halves: delivering it when an opponent leaves f7 undefended, and — more usefully — defending against it without panicking. The correct defence teaches genuine principles rather than a memorised sequence: develop pieces towards the threatened square, do not weaken your king's pawns, and punish an early queen sortie by attacking it with developing moves. Children who learn to refute Scholar's mate properly gain a real head start on opening understanding.

How to train scholar's mate

Forced mates reward exhaustive checking. Look at every check first, even the ones that look absurd — a mating net usually starts with a move that gives up material or puts a piece where it can be captured.
