About long diagonal mate puzzles
Long diagonal mates use a bishop or queen operating along the a1–h8 or a8–h1 diagonal to deliver checkmate, usually against a king that has castled and then weakened the g-file pawn. The pattern is worth studying because the long diagonal is the most under-watched line on the board for beginners: pieces on it can be a full seven squares from their target and still be decisive. These puzzles train peripheral board vision — noticing the bishop that has been sitting quietly on b2 for twenty moves and is suddenly the winning piece.
