About pawn endgame puzzles
Pawn endgames are the foundation of all endgame knowledge, because every other ending can simplify into one. They are also the least forgiving: with no pieces left, a single tempo decides the result. These puzzles cover the essential concepts — the opposition, the rule of the square, key squares, breakthroughs and triangulation. Master them and you will convert won games and save drawn ones that other players lose. Most club-level players never study pawn endings properly, which makes this one of the highest-return areas of chess for the effort involved.
How to train pawn endgame
A pawn endgame is a shape, not a sequence. Once you can spot the shape you will find the move in seconds instead of calculating from scratch, so train for recognition speed: glance, name the pattern, then verify.
