Zugzwang is a German term meaning 'compulsion to move' — the rare situation where every move a player can make worsens their position. If they could pass, they would, but in chess passing is not allowed. Zugzwang puzzles appear mainly in pawn endgames and knight endgames where precise king manoeuvring forces the opponent into a losing move. The concept of triangulation — using extra king moves to waste a tempo and put the opponent in zugzwang — is one of the most important advanced endgame techniques. Practising zugzwang puzzles trains precise calculation and the understanding of opposition, key squares, and tempo that defines high-level endgame play.

How to train zugzwang

A zugzwang is a shape, not a sequence. Once you can spot the shape you will find the move in seconds instead of calculating from scratch, so train for recognition speed: glance, name the pattern, then verify.
